Welcoming Life’s Emotions: Insights from The Guest House by Rumi

This article is inspired by one of my favourite poems, The Guest House by Rumi. It’s a simple yet profound reminder of what it means to be human—how our emotions, both joyful and painful, are like unexpected visitors that we must welcome rather than resist.

How often do we wish away sadness or frustration? We tell ourselves, I shouldn’t feel this way. I just want to be happy. But Rumi challenges us to shift our perspective. He invites us to see every emotion—joy, sorrow, anger, even shame—as a guest arriving at our door. Instead of slamming it shut, he encourages us to welcome them in, knowing that even the most difficult feelings serve a purpose.

Think about the times in your life when pain or loss reshaped you, making space for something new—a fresh start, deeper self-awareness, or unexpected growth. When life "clears you out," as Rumi says, it may be making room for something better.

This doesn’t mean we should enjoy pain, but rather that we can learn from it. Next time you’re overwhelmed by difficult emotions, try shifting your mindset: What is this feeling here to teach me? Instead of fearing discomfort, meet it with curiosity.

Because, as Rumi reminds us, every guest—no matter how unwelcome—comes bearing a gift.

Here is the original poem.

The Guest House-Rumi

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honourably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.
